The beginning Yoruba language course offered through the School of Continuing Education and Workforce Development of WCCCD ended Saturday, December 9, 2017 at the Northwest campus Detroit with great reviews with plans for children and adult classes in 2018.
The class originated due to the collaborative efforts of the District Vice Chancellor of International Program and Global Partnerships of WCCCD, Dr. Omobonike Odegbami, and the leadership of Odu’a Organization of Michigan, the Asiwaju Mr. Shola Salako and the Igbakeji Aare Mr. David Adetokunbo Williams. Their efforts are very much appreciated by the community.
Many thanks to the instructor, Alagba Adébóyè Adégbénró, who brought a wealth of Yoruba culture and language knowledge to the classroom. Elder Adégbénró is also a musician and illustrationist/cartoonist. You can follow him on his Facebook Page @ Adébóyè Adégbénró.
The Odu’a Organization of Michigan, IleOduduwa the Source, and Alagba Adébóyè Adégbénró hope to continue the relationship with the School of Continuing Education and Workforce Development of Wayne County Community College District, Detroit and the District Vice Chancellor of International Program and Global Partnerships of WCCCD, Dr. Omobonike Odegbami, to offer future classes.
We plan to continue providing different levels of the Yoruba language and cultural topics based on the number of people who listened to the live broadcasts by IleOduduwa the Source and based on the Odu’a Organization of Michigan Facebook reviews.
The Odu’a Organization of Michigan is drafting a plan to start a beginning Yoruba class for children between the ages of 8 to 11 years in March 2018. The pilot program emphasis will be on speaking, reading and writing Yoruba while incorporating music, art and language as teaching methods.
