Stagecoach Mary Field was one of the most successful entrepreneurs in the delivery service with the Post Office. Early postal service in the U.S. was an unstable business in which private contractors bid for postal routes and had to prove their ability to deliver mail in harsh weather, hostile territory and/or with rudimentary transportation. The stagecoach and rifle were must haves on the job and stagecoach Mary was one of the Post Offices most successful entrepreneurs.
Stagecoach Mary Fields won her contract to deliver mail in 1885 in Cascade, Montana and successfully did so for 8 years. In her 60’s at the time, she was said to deliver even in the worst blizzards and would resolve any disputes at the end of her barrel of need be. She retired in the area after her postal appointment was over and was a revered local resident and entrepreneur.
