This Adam Scott Golf Swing by Claude Harmon from July 15, 2015 video was recommended by my good friend Mr. Jack Heimann. Most people consider his swing near the top of modern golf.. I suppose he doesn’t win as much due to relatively poor putting and moderate level of desire. About 1/2 the video is ‘down the line’ taken from behind him and the other 1/2 is ‘face on’. Get ready to hit your ‘pause button’ at the following points:
11 seconds — his hands are hip hight, and the shaft is pointing down the line towards the target
14 seconds — notice that his left arm at the top of the swing is pointing at or on the same plane as the line to the ball. notice that although his hips have turned less than 45 degrees from the starting point, his shoulders have turned roughly 90 degrees – chest towards camera and back towards target. this hip vs shoulder rotation is developing torque
19 seconds — he has rotated completely thru the ball. almost all his weight is on the left foot, his hands have finished high and it’s now his chest that is facing the target
53 seconds — a great athletic position in advance of the swing. notice that his feet are a bit wider than the shoulders
101 seconds – notice that the shoulders have rotated about 90 degrees to the target line
102 seconds — early in the downswing his left hip begins to spin or rotate. some people envision that someone behind them is simply pulling their front left pocket behind them to make them rotate inside a barrel or drum. (years and years ago, Tiger Woods stated that when he needs to hit the ball a little farther, he simply spins his left hip faster — everything else is simply connected)
103 seconds — notice that his left knee has gone from a ‘flexed’ or bent position into a completely straightened position. Almost all the weight is on the left leg. It has become a post around which the rotation has happened
Using ADAM SCOTT video:
>> at the 54 second spot, look again at how athletic his basic stance is. right should is slightly lower, partly because right hand is lower on the club and partly because he wants to hit UP with a driver.
>> at this 54 second spot we can not see the details of his grip, but you can see that it is unified.
“The best video I found about grip is HOW TO PROPERLY GRIP by Martin Hall. It goes for a few minutes, but look especially at 2minutes, 48 seconds – notice the finger position and see 4 minutes for the position of the ‘vee’ from the left hand”
>> at the 1 minute mark, look at the angle between the left arm and the wrists. He has slowly ‘cocked’ his wrists late in the back swing which will help increase the speed late in the downswing.. Notice how he maintains this wrist angle as long as possible into the downswing. (56 years ago, my coach told me to imagine that i am pulling the butt end of the club into the ball to maintain this wrist angle as long as possible)
>> at the 1 minute and 3 second point, notive his arm extension. (remember me telling you that the swing is simply ‘geometry’ – the angles on downswing and backswing are so similar. at the 57 second point, look how his arms are close and his shaft is pointing down the target line. we’ll see later that your arms are far apart thru contact and your left arm folds badly into what golfers call ‘chicken wing’
>> at the 1 minute 2 second point, notice that his right foot is pushing his body into the rotation cycle well before he hits the ball. look to see right foot position at the instant of contact.
