THE BIBLIOGRAPHY OF OLUWO AWOBO PEARSE AND PA JAMES JIBESIN PEARSE
Preamble:
These findings is dedicated to the glory of the Almighty God who in His mercies has made the family of Awobo Pearse to at last get the full details about the name “PEARSE”.
The issue of this name has not only bordered the writer but more embarrassing to him, because if asked what is the meaning of the name Pearse, he hardly get perfect response to the question.
It is therefore great that the issue that forced members of the family to visit the abandoned home town of Itesi-Ake, Abeokuta was a blessing in disguise. I once again give thanks to God. This compilation is the authentic and confirmed history of the name Pearse.
How & Where Located:
There is an Elderly Papa that we met on getting to Itesi-Ake, he is Chief Kusimo (Bajito of Itesi). When we met him, in order to recognize us despite the fact, that he had earlier mentioned with full enthusiasm that all the faces he was seeing are of that of Late Pa James Jibesin Pearse.
On introductions, there were lots of identification rapport that made him happy and decided to explain details of the family from the root to us and he then confirmed the by asking the writer to entered his room and retrieve a big note- book. This notebook is where the history of the family from the root to present was written .
History:
There was a man called PA FASANYA AKINOLA (He is our Great Great Grand-Father) he lived at Ikereku in Abeokuta. He had three (3) children.
They are (1) Awobo – First Son, (2) Adefolalu – Daughter (3) Efuntadebo – Daughter. They all lived in Ikereku in Abeokuta, but later they came to settle finally at Itesi-Ake in the same Abeokuta.
Meanwhile, by the time of settlement it coincided with the period of slave trade. It then happened that the Slave Trader Stormed Itesi-Ake, and the directives then by the slave traders to the people, was that the 1 st male child of any family must be released to them by all means. Now Great Grand-Pa Awobo being the 1 st and only and Eldest Son of (Papa Fasanya Akinola). Pa Akinola has no other option or alternative than to surrender Pa Awobo to the slave traders. This was how Pa Awobo left for slavery.
The two sisters (Adefolalu and Efuntadebo) finally settled at itesi the house that has already been built by Pa Awobo, where he lived before taken for slavery. This house is the old system type, built with Palm.
At the end of slavery, instead of returning Papa Awobo to Abeokuta on gaining his freedom, the colonialist returned him to Lagos. When he came to Lagos, he started with the job he learnt when he served as a slave and that is the job of a cotton weaver. By this period, traders travelled from all Y oruba Villages to Lagos to buy goods and they will return to their various destination, but anytime he saw or meeting these Traders, through their dialect he will know and be touched that they are from Abeokuta, in most cases he always inquired from them about the people in Itesi-Ake. With God grace, one day, he found some traders that came from the exact place he was living before taken for slavery i.e Itesi-Ake, He then asked them about his sisters Adefolalu and Efuntadebo. The traders will respond and confirmed to him that they were all well, he will ask again are they still living ? and they will answer him, they are still living at Itesi-Ake, Abeokuta.
He then promised them that anytime they return to Lagos to buy their good he will follow them, pending their coming back to Lagos he will continue with his weaving business. When these traders came back to Lagos as usual to buy their goods, he (Papa Awobo) now using “Pearse” as his surname (circumstances beyond himself), because he could not retrace his initial surname. He then followed them to Itesi-Ake where he found his sisters and the raffia-palm house he, built before been taken to slavery, that the house was almost falling down finally. After staying for’some weeks, he told his sisters that he will be going back to Lagos to continue his trade in order to get some money to face the collapsing building and he will return later.
He then came back to Lagos, worked and have sufficient money that can make him go back to Itesi. He went back to Itesi-Ake, when he got their, first thing he did was to start the reconstruction of the building of the house with clay bricks.
MARRIED LIFE:
Pa Awobo married legally his first wife that born one child by name Pa Akindele. The woman had only one child for him. He then married another wife that born:- (1) James Jibesin (2) Edward and (3) Adeeni. Meanwhile, because of slavery his colonial master named Pa Awobo (Pearse). This name were used by his three children e.g. Awobo-Pearse, Edward-Pearse AND Adeeni.
Pa Awobo then continued with his professional/trained business (Weaving) and been a successful business man at that time, with great focus on future successes, he was honoured by then Alake of Egba land with the traditional title in his home town (Itesi) as the Second (2nd) Oluwo of Itesi-Ake, Abeokuta. It was as from this period that the whole Pearse compound is been called Oluwo Awobo Compound till this moment.
When Oluwo Awobo Pearse passed on, his eldest son Pa James Jibesin Pearse then continued with the development of the whole properties, especially the completion of Oluwo Awobo house. Finally, this is the true history of the origin of Awobo Pearse and was compiled by Mr. ‘Kole Pearse (grand Son) Mr. Ayodele B. Pearse (grand son) the writer, Pastor ‘Kunle Pearse (grand son) and Mr. ‘Fola Cole (grand son)
We give thanks to the Almighty God and Chief Kusimo (Baba Ajito of Itesi-Ake) our Cousin who gave us the story, the backing history book and narrated to us in details, line by line of the history and also Mrs. Esther Kusimo our cousin and Mrs. Pearse (Mama Oni Isu) the first wife to Pa James Jibesin Pearse’s last born Late Pa Oladele Pearse.
Thanks to God Almighty for His infinite mercies and guidance through all these long period of tracing the history of our origin.
