Growing the Olympic Sport of Table Tennis in the Detroit Metro Area will have it’s challenges especially among African Americans and kids of diverse ethnicities. Table Tennis is very popular around the world, even in Canada but not as much in the United States.
Growing the sport will need strategy stake holders like the city and local government civic leaders. Public access to local cities’ recreation facilities is essential. Additionally, adding the sport of table tennis to city youth sports programs and after school programs keeps the game present.
Other community involvement like churches, and cultural centers could embrace adding Table Tennis to their list of sports they offer recreationally. Golf has enjoyed a recent popularity surge as game boosters introduce the sport to youth in particularly disadvantaged areas that wouldn’t otherwise be exposed to the game. This has been an inspiring example of what I believe Table Tennis can do.
Local Table tennis clubs should welcome opportunities to orient and engage local clubs and organizations around play and promotion. This will hopefully encourage the growth of Table Tennis in the Detroit Metro Area.
